Capoeira absolute beginners’ series
Build a foundation in the acrobatic dance-art of capoeira on these four week beginners’ classes in Brooklyn, New York
Capoeira is not only a form of exercise to get fit, it is so much more. It is a rich and multidimensional art that teaches culture, language and music. On top of that, it encompasses a complete body workout. Capoeira is always played in a circle, called roda, which is an energetic and joyful culmination of skills learnt in class. As nothing is choreographed, it is a great lesson in quick reflex and spontaneity. The game (jogo), or ‘conversation’, is accompanied by musical instruments such as the berimbau (one-stringed bow instrument), pandeiro (tambourine), atabaque (drum), agogô (cowbell) and call-and-response singing. The rhythm and music from these instruments are essential elements in capoeira and set the tone for the games that will be played. The game itself is a conversation between two people testing one another’s skills with a combination of kicks, dodges, acrobatics and ginga: the foundation footwork of capoeira. It forms a beautiful and exciting performance.
The Absolute Beginners’ Series of capoeira classes, meets twice weekly for four weeks for a total of eight classes. The classes focus on stretching, conditioning, the fundamental movements of capoeira, and singing and playing capoeira instruments. The series provides a foundation for entering the ongoing classes offered at Raízes do Brasil Capoeira Brooklyn, and an introduction to the art, music, and history of capoeira.
It is advised to register early as these classes fill up quickly.
Classes are held at Raízes do Brasil Capoeira Brooklyn, located at 347 Flatbush Avenue, 2nd floor, at the corner of Park Place. The academy is located above the 7th Avenue station of the Q and B train.
