About the seller:

Both of us, Mike and Bobbi, were born and raised on small family ranches, 3rd generation natives, in eastern Wyoming. For both of us, the ranches we lived on were a family operation, with no hired men to do the work. We were raised in the true "Cowboy tradition" of eastern Wyoming, just a few miles from the Texas Trail and the Pony Express Trail. We spent our youth working at trailing and branding cattle, training colts, riding and exploring the many natural and historic features of our home country.

We chose outfitting as the industry to build our careers in, learning the trade from the ground up. After about 20 years or so of working for others and running our own hunting business, the time came to make a change that would bring us back closer to our heritage and High Wild & Lonesome Horseback Adventures was born. As this company has grown and developed over the past ten years, a new name has now been discovered that is even more descriptive of what this lifestyle we love to share is all about - Blue Sky Sage Horseback Adventures.

Our long and varied career has taught us that the best approach to a successful and enjoyable horseback riding vacation for all our guests requires a handful of simple, straightforward things. Those things are to provide an active, hands-on horseback experience for small groups of people, active, well-mannered saddle horses to ride, remote locations that put folks in the heart of the real wide-open spaces, and a comfortable wilderness camp atmosphere. These features provide every guest with the individual attention they deserve and appreciate.

It is our belief that Blue Sky Sage is a genuine reflection of what we have lived and what we envision. There is always an open invitation to you to pull your cinch, catch a stirrup and ride for the high points with us across these wild, wide-open spaces we call home.

Welcome to Wyoming.

Seeing Mustang horses up close, as well as other Wyoming wildlife such as desert elk and raptors, sounds like quite an impressive adventure!

Detailed description:

This story of the wild mustang horses of the Great Divide Basin began in 1520, when the Spanish introduced sixteen Barb Horses to the Americas. The descendants of these "1st Horses" made their way north of the Rio Grande, by way of Indian raids and trades, until some escaped into the protective home of the Great Divide Basin. This remote territory of sage and sand perfectly suits the natural instincts of the wild mustang. The mustangs need the wide-open spaces of this unfenced wilderness to thrive. It is a vast landscape, bigger than Yellowstone National Park, covered in short bunchgrass and secret waterholes. Here, the mustangs have room to roam and run free, protected from civilization by the barrier of the Continental Divide.

Over the past ten years, Blue Sky Sage has led numerous horseback adventures to see, up close, the wild mustang horses in Wyoming. Without exception, our past guests have found this experience to be one of the most thrilling and unique adventure vacations of their lives, with their perceptions of the wild mustang, and often themselves, changed forever.

Generally, wild mustang horses are spotted every day we ride the Great Divide. Many individual mustang bands, numbering from a just few head upwards to around a dozen horses each, often total upwards of 200 mares, foals, stallions, and juvenile stallions that are on the fringes of the main bands. As we guide riders into closer proximity to these wild horses, being careful not to disturb or excite them, it is not unusual to get within 50 yards of these truly wild and wary animals and the photo opportunities are exceptional. You can actually hear the nickers of the mares to their foals and the snorts of defiance by the stallions as they stand between their harems and anything that seems out of place.

In addition to getting "up close and personal" with the wild mustangs, we continually are in the presence of other wildlife, such as the desert elk, pronghorn antelope, mule deer, several varieties of hawks, prairie falcons and the golden eagle. To see this much wildlife however requires steady riding at a brisk pace for five to eight hours and 15-25 miles each day. The pace and distances covered make this one of the most challenging horseback adventures worldwide. Therefore, all participants must be skilled, experienced riders who meet or exceed the standards of the Experienced Skill Level description that we discuss with each rider before booking. Contact us before you book your horseback riding vacation and we can discuss your skills and physical condition in depth.
