Wilderness canoe trip on the beautiful Canadian lakes
Enjoy the spectacular natural landscapes of the Algonquin Park on this 3 day canoe trip
ITINERARY:
Day 1
Pickup at Finch Subway Station (optional - if you choose to drive yourself we will meet you up north). After a leisurely drive through the heart of Ontario farm land and cottage country we will have lunch on the shores of Rock Lake in Algonquin Park. With our "Expedition weight" kevlar canoes we will paddle into one of the interior lakes of Algonquin Park (Pen Lake). Before we start our guide will instruct everyone on the necessary skills and techniques for canoeing. After this 3 day canoe trip you won't be an expert but you will know how to pack and steer a canoe. After a 3 hour paddle (including a 300m portage) we will arrive at our wilderness camp. Since this is a true interior wilderness camp we will have to bring everything with us, including the tents.
Once we establish camp, with the help of our experienced guide, we are free to explore the lake we are on. There are several large rapids that were once used as log chutes that are quite interesting. Also, in this area it is quite common to see moose grazing by the edge of the lake - we have seen over a half dozen in a 2 day period here!
Dinner will consist of fresh food, prepared on site, and enjoyed by the side of a blazing campfire! Afterwards, we can sit and watch the Milky Way rise slowly above our heads. The sky is so clear in Algonquin Park that you can even count satellites passing by! And if we're really lucky we may even hear wolves howling in the distance! This is real Canadian camping!
Day 2
Today is a day of exploration. We can spend it exploring the lake we are on, by canoe, looking for moose, or perhaps do another portage and canoe up a meandering river. If we decide to try another lake one option is to do a short portage past an old dam used for logging, and then canoe the slow moving waters of the South Madawaska River. Since we will have to get out of our canoes to pull them over several beaver dams be sure to bring shoes or sandals for the water!
Day 3
After an early morning breakfast we pack up camp and start the paddle home. The early start is a great opportunity to see wild life (if we are lucky) coming to the lakeshore to drink.
We will get back to our vehicle about 11 am and start the drive back to Toronto. You will be dropped off at Finch subway station at about 4 pm.
Qualifications
With a refreshing approach to eco-tourism, Call Of The Wild likes to treat all its customers as friends and keeps its groups small – about 4 to 8 people. This also means they run their trips a little differently - everyone is expected to fully partake in the adventure (including helping out with the portages and camp chores)!
Algonquin Park:
Only 3 hours north of Toronto, Algonquin Park is Ontario's oldest Provincial Park, and one of the largest in Canada. It is even larger than several European countries! Algonquin boasts over 7700 square kilometres, with over 2000 fresh water lakes. Within the borders of Algonquin Park can be found deer, moose, beaver, wolves, bears, and many other wild animals, all in their natural habitats and, for the most part, untouched by Man.
Algonquin Park is so big, and so varied, that one end of Algonquin can have entirely different weather from the other end! In fact, it can be compared to several countries in size! Algonquin Park is 1.5 times larger than Prince Edward Island, 1/4 the size of Belgium, 3 times larger than Luxembourg, 7 times larger than Hong Kong, and roughly the same size as Wales! We have canoe trips going to several different locations within Algonquin Park - it takes more than one canoe trip to truly "see" Algonquin!
