Introduction to shoemaking - Five day hands-on workshop at ShoeSchool

ShoeSchool workshops are based in a working studio and taught by a true craftsman with over 48 years experience. At this five day hands-on workshop students will learn to make shoes from scratch, starting with a shoe last, creating a pattern, for their own feet, stitching and hand lasting the leather uppers, using basic hand tools.

Whether you are an aspiring footwear craftsperson, company executive from a non-shoemaking background who needs a basic appreciation of footwear design, a doctor, an accountant, an architect, or a fashion design student looking to benefit from a knowledge of footwear manufacturing techniques – you will find this practical shoemaking course an invaluable learning experience.

No prior experience of any kind is required to participate; the "Introduction to Shoemaking" programs are designed to give a basic overview of the entire process of hand crafting footwear from concept to completion, and to have a positive and fun experience making shoes.

The most important requirement is a positive attitude, The shoes you make during to workshop will be made to fit your own feet. They will be a classic shoe pattern that will give you a solid foundation to explore your own creative designs in the future.

When you leave you take the knowledge, the personal experience and the reference materials, including a complete listing of suppliers with you. Hopefully, you will return home and continue to make footwear....

    Established in 1981, Shoe School remains dedicated to:

    the preservation, sharing and furthering of the knowledge and skills,

    related to the Ancient Art of Designing Hand Crafted Footwear.

    The Shoe School is run by Alan Zerobnick, who has been in the shoe business since 1962.

    As well as opening up his studio to pass on his extensive knowledge of the leather working and shoe making craft Alan also runs further advanced shoe making courses on a privately arranged basis which can be customised to suit the indiviudal project.

    These courses include:

    • Advanced Shoemaking Workshops

    • Cottage Industry Project Development

    • Distance Learning Programs, for people seeking consultation and advice on footwear or leather craft projects.
