We will take you off the beaten tourist path in Brooklyn where your home base will be the Marriott Hotel in downtown Brooklyn literally in walking distance from the Brooklyn Bridge and the historic Brooklyn Heights Promenade. From both locations you’ll capture quintessential NYC sunrise and sunset images with the harbor and Manhattan skyline in the background. Learn to create cool flash portraits with belly dancers and athletes in DUMBO with the Brooklyn Bridge, Manhattan Bridge and NYC skyline as your backdrop. You’ll also have the opportunity to photograph some of NYC’s most infamous sites including an off camera flash night shoot in Times Square, the South Street Seaport plus great views of the Statue of Liberty and the Empire State Building!

You will learn:

  • Flash and lighting theory
  • Balanced fill flash
  • Off camera wireless flash technique
  • How to create bounce flash
  • Use of soft boxes, reflectors, gels and scrims with TTL flash
  • Portrait lighting techniques using one flash and multiple flash set ups
  • How to use a ring flash attachment with TTL flash
  • Strobic flash for motion shots
  • How to work with models during photo shoots

  • Itinerary

    Day 1: Friday June 4th (Begins at 7pm)

  • Intros, opening presentation, examples of flash photography
  • Flash intro, qualities of light (angle of incidence, inverse sq. law, hard vs. soft) Light theories will be covered plus an examination of hard vs. soft light, shadow transitions, separation
  • Flash functions and accessories, get to know how your flash works
  • Work with every student to make sure they know the functions on their flash

  • Day 2: Saturday June 5th

  • TTL flash, balanced fill flash and bounce flash; dragging the shutter —busy session demonstrating the above, pros and cons and effects
  • Off camera flash, single and multiple flash set ups —another busy session demonstrating and working with off camera flash
  • Battery powered studio lighting techniques and use Ranger Packs
  • Photo Shoot where students can try a variety of techniques with assistance of instructors
  • Altering the light with soft boxes, reflectors, scrim panels, gels, snoots.
  • Twilight/Evening Photo Shoot where students will experiment with soft boxes and gels to create moody portraits.
  • Downloading/Editing with instructors available to help and coach students and review the techniques taught this day.
  • Demo of studio gear

  • Day 3: Sunday June 6th

  • Critiques and reviews of yesterday’s images.
  • Photo Shoot where students have their last chance to try any of the techniques learned with pro gripping by instructors!
  • Downloading/Reviews
  • Final slide show of students images and a wrap up of the weekend.

    Camera Gear

  • Digital SLR with back up camera that will fit your lenses
  • Battery charger
  • A few extra batteries
  • Memory cards (bring plenty!!!)
  • Sensor cleaning supplies

  • Lenses

  • 12-24mm or 17-35mm
  • 28-105mm lens or similar
  • 70-200mm lens
  • Lens hoods for all lenses
  • Fish-eye lens (if you have one, very creative lens!)

  • Computer / Digital Acessories

  • Laptop with charger and Photoshop CS3 and Lightroom (not mandatory)
  • Storage device, such as an EPSON P5000, or portable hard drives like Lacie hard drives www.lacie.com

  • TTL Flash
  • Lightweight tripod (carbon fiber)

Tom Bol is an editorial and commercial photographer who specializes in adventure sports, portraits and travel photography. He shoots assignments for clients including Columbia Sportswear, Men’s Journal, National Geographic Adventure, Nikon, Sunset Magazine and the Wall Street Journal. He is represented by 6 stock agencies, and his images are used for advertising, books, billboards, brochures and posters. He loves to teach, and has taught workshops for 12 years.
