Wren and Hawksmoor City Churches: Phoenix from the Flames
The old Tudor Palace, loved dearly by Henry VIII and Elizabeth I was replaced by the architecturally revolutionary Queen's House and the Old Hospital for Naval pensioners. After approaching Greenwich from the Thames we will see the works of Inigo Jones, Webb, Wren, Hawksmoor, James 'Athenian' Stuart, West and Thornhill.
After lunch in the Nevada Street Cafe (please bring £15) we will walk up to Wren's Observatory, set up to crack the Longitude problem. This was not achieved until 1759, when the revolutionary designs of John Harrison bought about the 1st sea-faring clock that saved thousands of lives.
