Bushcraft and eco-survival courses on the Orkney Islands, Scotland
Gain the skills and confidence to roam the wilderness with a tailor made 2 day eco-survival course, as seen on the BBC Adventure Show.
You’ll be able to watch the sunset, relaxed in the knowledge that the fading light will hold no fear for you. You will wander off paths to find secluded beaches, places others never go. Pick up master tips and skills; how to not just survive but actually thrive in the outdoors.
What you will learn:
• survival skills - how to, and in what order
• what gear you need and what you don’t
• how to walk so it's enjoyable, not exhausting
• your rights and responsibilities in the countryside
• what to do if things go wrong
• how to read map and compass
• confident navigation at night
What type of people do the course?
All types! Our groups are usually half men and half women, with many solo travelers, or families.
Do I need to be fit?
No. Except for rare instances, everyone can come on a course because they are tailored to the fitness level of those attending. The course isn’t meant to be strenuous, unless you want it to be, it’s meant to teach you the skills you need to go outside and have fun.
Who leads the programme?
Instructor Malcolm Handoll is a certified Mountain Leader, with over 15 years’ experience leading individuals and groups of all ages in the mountains of Scotland and Wales. He and his wife Rachel will work with you personally to develop a programme that meets your needs, interests, and fitness level.
All equipment is provided, including tents, sleeping bags, food, and navigation gear, though you are welcome to bring your own.
Getting here and staying here:
The islands can be reached by both boat and plane depending on your sense of urgency, we always recommend the boat! There are a full variety of places to stay on the island, we are more than happy to help find the ideal place for your stay.
Qualifications
Malcolm, the founder, grew up in North Wales beside the sea and the beautiful Snowdonia National Park. “My childhood was one of playing on the hillside, exploring nature and getting lost in my imagination.” Between him and his wife they are the ideal people to give tours of the islands and demonstrate how to survive there.
Sustainability and environmental projects are of a primary concern to Five Senses and they are heavily involved in The Touchwood Project that hopes to make Orkney more self-sufficient and to teach everyone how to live a more sustainable lifestyle.
