This practical one-day course will teach you how to construct a wood-burning stove that is suitable for your home, a workshop, motor-home, yurt, shed or canal boat.

Learn how to design, build and install a strong, effective, durable stove for your own needs, and using recycled materials. The stove is made from a 15kg gas bottle and is fitted with an internal baffle and a fire rope seal on the door.

Aimed at beginners, this course is an opportunity to have a go at mig welding, cutting, grinding, and steel fabrication.

The course includes:

• health & safety

• good workshop practice

• welding safety

• use of power tools

• cutting and grinding steel

• basic mig welding

• stove design and fabrication

The tutor, Grant Oatley, has been making wood-burners for over ten years also working as an artist in steel and wood for over twenty years.

This course is designed to provide a taster in metalworking and does not constitute professional training.

Students are asked to arrive at around 9.30am for a prompt 10am start. The course finishes at 5pm.

We recommend you wear work clothes, and bring a pen and notebook. Lunch can be bought in the café on-site, or do bring a packed lunch if you prefer.

Your tutor for this course, Grant Oatley, has been making wood-burners for over ten years. Grant has also worked as an artist in steel and wood for over twenty years.

This course is organised by Low-Impact Living Initiative (LILI), a non-profit organisation whose mission is to help people reduce their impact on the environment, improve their quality of life, gain new skills, live in a healthier and more satisfying way, have fun and save money.

Windmill Hill City Farm is an independent community project situated half a mile south of Bristol city centre that aims to meet the needs of local people through a wide range of social, environmental, educational, recreational and economic activities. Started in 1976, it has over 200,000 visitors per year.
