Don’t overlook Liechtenstein

14th September 2010 > Ooh.com Stuff, Travel

Liechtenstein – an alpine country all of its own.

Our friends at Zoombu tell us why Liechtenstein is the place to put on your travel itinerary this year.

Cuddled in the Alps, between Switzerland and Austria, Liechtenstein is a true intra continental country, and requires passing through two other countries to reach the sea.  Just 24 km long and approximately 6.5 km wide, Liechtenstein can be visited in its entirety in one weekend.

Clucking good Hen party ideas

27th April 2010 > Leisure, Ooh.com Stuff

It’s that time of year again… Hen party time. Which could mean it’s time to steer clear of the local street on a Friday night for fear of being trampled by L plated, winged, cow girls and she-devils as they sip vodka jelly and stuff fivers in passing boxer shorts.

But what’s this? NO NEED to fear the high street any more?

It’s true; there are plenty of ways to bond with fellow bridesmaids without resorting to re-creating a bad early 90’s Halloween party. Here are some top ideas:

Ooh’s top five adventure movies of all time – live the movie dream

15th April 2010 > Leisure, Ooh.com Stuff, Travel

Ever left the cinema wishing you could re-live a few of those big screen adventure moments yourself? Well here’s your chance to be the star of an adventure of your own. We’ve picked out five of our favourite adventure movies of all time and found trips and tours on which you can re-live some of those big screen moments.

1. Into the Wild

North America plays host to some of the world’s most remarkable back-country landscapes. Though Into the Wild is ultimately a tragic and cautionary tale, it’s also one of the greatest adventure stories of our time, based on the two year wanderings of Chris McCandless, aka Alexander Supertramp. As his journey traverses North America and New Mexico, the movie features inspirational wildlife scenes and is accompanied by a beautiful soundtrack by Eddie Vedder (Pearl Jam’s front man).

This summer you can experience these for yourself and follow in Chris’s footsteps on a Kayak adventure in Alaska Supertramp style:

Or  Wildlife internship week in the Montana wilderness

Stay in a cabin on the wide Montana plains,  get physical cutting rails or piling slash, learn how to identify plants, birds and mammals, and get involved in an ongoing wildlife census project.  Go with a desire to immerse yourself in the wilderness.

2. The Motorcycle Diaries

This rite of passage tale follows a young Ernesto ‘Che’  Guevara and his friend Alberto Granado embarking on an adventure every school boy hero dreams of.  Travelling across Latin America on a beat up Norton 500, the young Che is transformed by his observations of the life of the impoverished peasantry. Arouse your revolutionary spirit on a motorbike expedition of your own, following the route of the young campaigner for the people.

Click on the image below to listen to the soundtrack,  upload it to your generic portable music player as the music to accompany the ride of your life.

3.The Darjeeling Limited

The colourful and very funny Darjeeling Limited follows three brothers Jack, Francis and Peter who enjoy sibling rivalry at its best and find enlightenment on their passage through India.

‘Find yourself’ in the lands of the Raj and immerse yourself in the county’s humour, humility and unbelievable food on an 8.5 week Indian Cultural immersion tour. Offering life transforming experiences while living with and learning about the Himalayan culture of Sikkim.

Peter: ‘I love the way this country smells. I’ll never forget it. It’s kind of spicy.’

4. Touching the void

Possibly not one you want want to re-live as such, more like avoid. A nail biting modern classic of a real life thriller and testament to the will of man to survive against all odds. Touching the Void is the true account of climber Joe Simpson’s amazing solo mission to return to base camp. After surviving a 180 ft fall into a deep mountain crevasse and with a badly broken leg having Joe is left for dead by his climbing partner.

Had Simpson’s climbing buddy booked on this crevasse rescue training course in the first place, perhaps he could have avoided finding himself in such a pickle…

5. Monty Python and the Holy Grail

Probably the most famous and quoted  Monty python films, The Holy Grail follows Arthur, King of the Britons and his band of imaginary-horse riding knights as they set off on an adventure through Britain in search of the Holy Grail.

1st soldier with a keen interest in birds: ‘Who goes there?’
King Arthur: ‘It is I, Arthur, Son of Uther Pendragon, from the castle of Camelot. King of the Britons, defeater of the Saxons, sovereign of all England.’
1st soldier with a keen interest in birds: ‘Pull the other one.’

Be you a  Sir Lancelot the brave or a Sir Robin the Not-Quite-So-Brave-as-Sir Lancelot, you can follow the grail trail from Bristol, England to Roslyn in Scotland. Along the way you get to visit key spiritual sites and enjoy private visits to Rosslyn Chapel, Stonehenge and Avebury. You’ll also learn and practice meditative techniques at these powerful spiritual sites…

Dennis: Oh, but you can’t expect to wield supreme executive power just because some watery tart threw a sword at you.

……………………………………………

So our advice to you is if you’re looking to do something a little different this year, take inspiration from the big screen.

Summed up perfectly in the world wise words of Christopher McCandless When you want something in life, you just gotta reach out and grab it

Let us know your top adventure movie of all time and why you love it in the comments section below; at the end of next week we’ll pick one lucky winner and send you and a friend to the film of your choice at your local cinema!
