Clucking good Hen party ideas

27th April 2010 > Leisure, Ooh.com Stuff

It’s that time of year again… Hen party time. Which could mean it’s time to steer clear of the local street on a Friday night for fear of being trampled by L plated, winged, cow girls and she-devils as they sip vodka jelly and stuff fivers in passing boxer shorts.

But what’s this? NO NEED to fear the high street any more?

It’s true; there are plenty of ways to bond with fellow bridesmaids without resorting to re-creating a bad early 90’s Halloween party. Here are some top ideas:

1. Action Girls: Discover Polo day and night in with the girls, Windsor, Surrey

No experience necessary. Spend the day learning how to ride a polo pony,  enjoy a two hour lesson taught by an Argentinian pro. Afterwards, relax and unwind over an Argentine BBQ and the chance to watch a pro polo game. It all costs £130 for a full day out including food and pick-up and drop off from London. click here for more details and booking.

Get hands-on with your photography

12th April 2010 > Ooh.com Stuff

You seldom meet someone who doesn’t enjoy taking photos, and the Ooh team is no exception. Whether it’s @OohFood’s collection of foodie snaps or @OohAdventure’s latest snow-bound adventure, we all take photos and love looking over them to see how they’ve turned out.

That said, it can all get quite overwhelming when you talk ISOs and apertures, shutter speeds and frame rates.  So we decided to tip you off about some of the best photography blogs and sites around the web, whether you want knowledge, advice, or just great photos to gawp at.

LONDON
London’s slow organic growth has blessed the city with unusual architecture and areas with distinctive characters. It’s an ideal place for learning to take good photos, with subject matter abounding.

The Earth Photograpgy Blog is a great place to seek inspiration for London’s diversity of subjects.

For those interested in the professional and competitive circuits, another great London site for the radar is the London Photo Association site. The LPA hosts profile pages for members, so it’s a great place to research photographers whose style appeals to you.

NEW YORK
New York city is romantic, exhilarating and glamorous, but with enough grit and grime to challenge the worst of the rest. It’s a great place to find photographic inspiration, not just from the icons on its tourist circuit, but from the people who live and work there.

Check out the New York Daily Photo Blog for a fantastic insider’s take on city life.

WORLDWIDE
You’ll rarely find better collections of photos than on the Boston.com Big Picture. This is one of our all-time favourites, bringing together selections of photos taken by the world best photojournalists and press agencies and grouping them together into themes.

Recent themes have ranged from the Winter Olympics, to the War in Afghanistan and from the act of kissing to the current headline “Signs of Spring”.]

TWITTER
There are tons of great photography folks to follow on twitter, but here is a handful of our favourites.

@photojack – Informative and engaging photography twitter pro
@featureshoot – Hunting down emerging photography talent
@FPblog – Fashion photography blog with illuminating tutorials
@LATimesPhotos – Photojournalism breaking news stories across the US
@lensculture – Superb magazine celebrating trends in the photography world
@lomography – For all things deliciously photo-retro
@DailyImage – Diverse new photo collections updated daily
If you’re mad about photography we’d love to hear from you @OohPhoto too.
NOW TAKE THE REINS…
No matter how much you gawp at great photographers photos, you won’t get better by osmosis, so here are a few hands-on trips and courses to help improve your photography.

Kevin Wong, a noted travel and landscape photographer runs these half day photo expeditions to photograph the Spring Wildflowers of the Mojave Desert in California; the perfect way to warm up your shutter finger for the spring.

For something more adventurous, head to Morocco. Kevin Gilbert is an award-winning photojournalist, teacher and entrepreneur based in Annapolis, Maryland. His 8 day photographic adventure will have you shooting landscapes from the Sahara Desert to the High Atlas Mountains.

If you’re looking to brush up on specific photography skills, like using your camera flash to create more dramatic shots, this 3 day course in New York may be perfect. Tom Bol is an editorial and commercial photographer who specializes in adventure sports, portraits and travel photography, so you’ll take the lead from an experienced pro!

Don’t forget, if you run courses, classes, workshops and events, you can list them on Ooh.com for free. Just register and start uploading your listing. It’s that easy!

Pottery classes: a relaxing way for kil’n time

7th April 2010 > Craft & Creative

Aside from the terrible pottery gag above, we’re really taken with these pottery classes. And from the number of bookings for pottery classes that have been made on Ooh.com, it seems lots of people are wanting to have a go at this popular craft.

Shaun Hall is an Essex based potter who offers fun and informal tuition in his small but well equipped studio.

He’ll teach you all about pottery making techniques – from coiling, slabbing, making textures and tiles, to learning to throw your own pots on a kick wheel. He’ll also give you the chance to have a go at the ancient art of Raku kiln firing.

Classes last 2 hours and are offered for 1 or 2 people. And we think they’re a bit of a steal at just £35 per person.  To find out more and book your place, click here.

PS: did you hear about the potter’s apprentice who dropped lots of pots? He got fired!

(Sorry, no excuse for the terrible gags….)

Don’t forget, if you run courses, classes, workshops and events, you can list them on Ooh.com for free. Just register and start uploading your listing. It’s that easy!

Start The Dance – On The Right Foot with Jess Brichto

1st June 2009 > Leisure, Ooh.com Stuff

When you’re planning a wedding, there’s a hella lot to remember. Flowers? Check. Venue? Check. Speeches? Check. Drinks? Check. Spouse to be? Check. But there’s one thing you might not think of immediately: the first dance with your newly wedded husband or wife.

A quick survey of the ooh team suggests that we would be, at best, ill prepared for any kind of high profile dance situation involving multiple witnesses. But that’s where Jess Brichto at Start The Dance steps in.

The Big Night - Wedding Dance

We asked Jess where the idea to give couples-to-be dancing lessons came from: ‘My mother-in-law had been to many weddings where she’d agonised over watching couples step on each others’ toes and sway embarrassingly from side to side. As I was a dancer, I thought it would be a good idea to help brides and grooms shine on their big day.’

We wanted to know what kind of couples Jess deals with: ‘There are two types. The first is the “youtube” type – they want to perform and entertain their guests- they want some serious cheers and whoops. Their dance is most likely to include dips, twirls and even lifts!’

‘The other type couldn’t think of anything worse and merely want confidence. They want to know how to hold each other and move in a natural way to avoid that embarrassing shuffle!’

Dancing Lessons with Start The Dance

We asked Jess if there are any other dance classes she runs: ‘a team of us that work for Start The Dance and we cover all styles including Bollywood and Bellydance! We’ve had teachers in peoples’ homes to spruce up a dinner party, at hen parties, offices to add a bit of dazzle to a lunch break, schools and colleges.’

‘We’ve taught single people for a bit of extra confidence before an all important date and huge groups at events and festivals too.’

We wanted to know what people enjoy most about this, save knowing they won’t be horribly embarrassed on their wedding day by their rhythmical ineptitude. ‘People say that the lessons are enormous fun. Planning a wedding can be a huge pressure and dance lessons are often the best way to spend time together amidst the chaos to relax and have fun. At the end of all our classes you can tell that everyone has had a great time.’

Dancing at a Wedding

We asked Jess if she had any good stories to share and she produced this gem: ‘For a corporate event I had taught a team of bosses to dance to ‘Hot stuff’ to amuse their employee’s. As if it wasn’t embarrassing enough the first time round, their staff made them do it all again at the end of the night!’ We’re hoping to nab Jess for the next ooh party…

Jess Brichto - Start The Dance

We wanted to know how many couples Jess teches a year: ‘Around 1000. About a third of people who contact me are grooms and the other two thirds are brides. It’s the modern day – boys have to do their bit you know!’

So boys, drop Jess and email here or visit www.startthedance.co.uk to save yourself the shame of dancing like a chimp on that special day!
