At Ooh, we ❤ all things eco. @oohfood is slightly obsessed with food foraging, @oohadventure is always on the lookout for the latest in sustainable travel, and @oohcraft can’t resist anything sustainable.

As it’s Earth Day, we’ve wanted to share news of some inspirational people teaching us about sustainability. Going green is nothing new, but when even corporations like H&M are pushing green awareness with their Garden Collection, the pressure is on to make what difference you can.
First up,
Karen Cannard of
The Rubbish Diet blog. It’s not about a failing battle with love handles, it’s about slimming down your bins. Karen undertook a challenge made by her local council to create a zero waste week.
After 8 weeks of trial and error and a lifestyle makeover, Karen managed to reach a waste size of zero . Karen’s inspiring blog offers a step by step guide to zero waste, perfect for anyone wanting to rethink rubbish.
Another champion greenie is
Piper Terrett. Author of
The Frugal Life, Piper also writes a great
blog under the same name covering wild food, frugal activities and moneysaving tips. Her post about
the embarrassing doggy bag issue, for example, has stirred relevant discussion about food waste.
Not Eating Out in New York is a seriously well presented eco food blog. For 2 years,
Cathy gave up restaurants and cooked for herself and for others – at supper clubs, dinners and events. Reading her monthly published “Reasons for not eating out”, offers a convincing argument to go anti-resto too. Read
Because the hair in my food is always mine as an amuse bouche!
Stay kitchen-put for a month and try the blog’s recipes, accompanied with brownie points for cost efficiency and health factor. Here’s hoping you never return to Mickey D’s.
Our last eco heroes are the Dervease family, who champion a self-sufficient lifestyle on their urban homestead in Pasadena. Keeping farm animals, fueling the car with home-brewed bio diesel, powering the home with alternative energy, food preserving… You name it, the Dervaeses do it.
The blog provides endless suggestions for a low-impact life, with stylish photos, showing that you don’t need to be a hick to achieve eco chic. Don’t miss the farm animals’ portraits when you check out
The Little Homestead in the City. Clementine the hen, and Lady Fairlight the goat are our favourites.
