In case you’re not completely snowed in and are looking for something fun to do, we’d suggest making a beeline for Sketch’s pop-up café at the Royal Academy of Arts, launching today. The café will run alongside the RA’s GSK contemporary exhibition ‘Aware: Art Fashion Identity’, so expect a concoction of fashion, food and art, presented in Sketch’s signature quirky style.

The cafe’s stage set interior is designed by Andres Ros and inspired by the 2011 Spring Summer catwalk collections. Collaborations with Mawi, Linda Farrow (sunglass designer extraordinaire), Harper’s Bazaar and artist Dinos Chapman will certainly add a glamorous spark, but if Erdem’s flowers, Wang’s all-white or Prada’s block colours will make their mark on the venue remains to see. Chapman’s images of Claudia Schiffer promise to be a highlight, as does the Michelin-starred food.

Sophisticated palates will rejoice that Chef Pierre Gagnaire has designed the menu, complete with sandwiches and salads as well as Sketch’s famous viennoiseries, cakes and pastries. Breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea will be served and if you can’t get enough of Sketch after that, head straight to Conduit Street for dinner in The Lecture Room & Library. If the pop-up is anything as OTT as Sketch HQ, you won’t be disappointed.

Catch the pop-up until 31 January 2011, when the ‘Aware’ exhibition finishes. The café follows the RA’s normal opening hours, and more information can be found here.

Buying Christmas presents can be quite stressful. Even thinking about it can cause most people to break down in a pile of sweat. Picture the shopping hysteria on Oxford Street; the lights from the department stores make you squint and the snap happy tourists stop right in front of you to take photos of Selfridges’s window display – it just ain’t pretty. So why not buy your Christmas presents online?

We turned to From Britain With Love for help. FBWL is an online guide to all things beautiful and British made, and is a perfect site if you want to support and learn more about British producers. Check out the latest events and trends, read course reviews, and browse the travel features. You’ll find designer-makers to craftspeople, food producers and retailers listed in the online directory, and we guarantee that you’ll feel inspired just after a quick glance.

The list below features products (and companies) found on From Britain With Love, and we think they would make for excellent Christmas presents indeed.

For the stylish sister grown tired of Accessorize

Who wouldn’t want a picture of the dashing Mr. Darcy hanging around their neck? Get rid of the photo of Lizzie Bennet and find an appropriate photo of your sister’s face instead. Perfect statement necklace if her boyfriend is too much of a Mr. Wickham character. £38 from Hoolala.co.uk.

For the tea-loving auntie

This Seaside mug will make your nice aunt dream of seaside breaks in Cornwall or ocean escapes further afield while she’s sipping her daily Earl Grey. You can buy it at From the Wilde and it will only set you back £16.

For the mother in awe of azaleas

If your mother’s IKEA vases simply don’t cut it any more, these porcelain milk jugs by Hanna Rysgaard will spruce up any window sill. Colourful and quirky, you’ll be the favoured child from now on. Buy them at Not from the High Street.com.

For the brother in need of a quick slipper upgrade

If you’re sick of you seeing your brother shuffling around the house in his dirty socks, these leather slip-on indoor shoes from Triggerfish Shoes will do the trick. Sporty, comfy and handmade in Britain, what’s not to like? Only £45.

For the Claret-inclined dad

A fine handmade wine rack from Rack and Ruin will encourage your dad to lay off the Jacob’s Creek and hopefully invest in Pomerol wines instead. On the slightly pricey side of a Christmas present, at least it might inspire daddy to invest in a whole bar… This particular design is yours for £295.

For the forgetful uncle

A personalised diary from Noble Macmillan will keep your uncle organised – and he won’t forget your birthday next year. The super compact pocket diary is priced at £19 and to add initials, names or dates, each character costs £2. Let’s hope your uncle’s name is Bob.

For more great Christmas present ideas we recommend browsing From Britain With Love. Keep an eye on their blog and Twitter, who knows, they might run a Christmas feature too…

If fancy dress is your thing, you should consider the Prohibition party, Saturday 6th. It’s all about 1920’s fun, so get decadent and dress up as as a larger than life Dorian Gray dandy or flirty flapper. Held at the Art Deco Bloomsbury Ballroom, expect gambling tables, floor shows and plenty of Charleston moves.

The biggest event this weekend is obviously Bonfire Night. Victoria Park (Sunday 7th) is where the Easterners go, and Battersea Park (Saturday 6th) the Southerners’ hideout. Eat toffee apples, drink your first cup of mulled wine and try not to catch hypothermia.

If standing outside in the cold isn’t your idea of great night out, the Alternative Bonfire Night at The Brill (Friday 5th) might be something for you. Admire an indoor fireworks display and sip firework inspired cocktails on the heated roof terrace.

Just for once buy your Christmas presents early. Head to the Spirit of Christmas at Olympia this weekend and pick up pretty gifts for uncle, cousins and your ma. Imagine kicking back with an eggnog the 23rd of December, knowing you don’t have to dash off to John Lewis for a desperate shopping spree.

Oh Reiss how we love thee, but how expensive a silk vest is… This weekend we can pick up quite a few fashionable items at Reiss’ sample sales, without completely breaking the bank. Be prepared to fight over fashion findings both Friday and Saturday from as little as £10. New stock arrive daily so sharpen your elbows.

Who wants to expose their bodies to nasty paraben products? Sign up to Low Impact Living’s Make your own natural skincare workshop this Saturday at Hackney Farm, and create products free from harsh chemicals and preservatives. Avocado oil, rose water and shea butter ( maybe not at the same time, mind) can be thrown in, and you’ll have your very own night cream, face mask or body butter.

Forget about the bustle at Borough Market, Maltby Street Market. held every Saturday in Bermondsey, is your new food heaven. The tourist crowds have yet to find it, meaning you can actually see the food stalls. Purchase the best parma ham from The Ham and Cheese Company and buy your latte from Monmouth.

Our restaurant of the week is Bar Boulud. It might not be a place you visit everyday, but think of it as the perfect space for your office Christmas party. Get on your boss’s case now. Enjoy rustic Lyonnaise fare by sleb chef Daniel Boulud – the patés are a winner, as are the burgers and the service. A bistro at its best.

If you haven’t yet made plans for New Year’s eve this year, consider Edinburgh’s Hogmanay. It’ll blow your lid off. The event consists of 4 days of celebrations, centred around a huge street party on New Year’s Eve. The street party offers live music, DJs, dancing and a mahoosive fireworks display. Given the backdrop of Edinburgh castle, the fireworks contend with the best in the world.

Image: Chris Watt

Throw in thousands of merry revellers welcoming in the New Year, and you’ve got a night you won’t forget.

The opening event of Edinburgh’s Hogmanay 2011 is the famed Torchlight Procession on Thursday 30th December. Here you can join tens of thousands of torch carriers as they create a river of fire from the historic Royal Mile to the Son et Lumiére and fireworks finale on Calton Hill.

Image: Peter Sandground

Once you’ve warmed up to the atmosphere on Thursday evening, take a spin around the city to enjoy one of the many restaurants and pubs within easy walking distance of the procession. Ooh.com recommends Chez Jules for no-nonsense French cuisine and the famously grimy Tron pub to catch some of Edinburgh’s buzzing live music and comedy. Make sure you get some sleep though, Friday’s gonna be a long day.

Friday 31st features the main events of the festival, kicking off with the Hogmanay Concert in the Gardens set beneath Edinburgh Castle. Both Scottish Rock giants Biffy Clyro and the indie legends The Charlatans will be playing at the concert in the garden this year and the concert will build up to the world-renowned midnight fireworks spectacular, welcoming in the New Year.

Getting there:
Find out how to get there on the Homanay Website, here.

Get your tickets:
- Online at www.edinburghshogmanay.com
- By calling Edinburgh’s Hogmanay Box Office on 0844 894 2011

So get yourself and your mates set up to join one of the world’s most envied New Year’s celebrations!

Since you’ve got a while to wait until you enjoy those tickets, you could use Ooh.com to find and book activities directly with their sellers all over the UK. And the rest of the world!

Remember Remember the 5th November…

Bonfire Night, a wonderful marker for the beginning of the British winter – the clocks go back and it’s time for us to nest down for the winter. Time too for those singletons out there to take advantage of the chill in the air and to find someone to snuggle up to for the Winter. And what better excuse for a date than Bonfire Night.

We were recently chatting with our friends at The Great Date Guide about the joys of bonfire nights and how romantic it can be to wrap up warm, step out on the arm of another, warm hands on spiced winter punch and hold hands while gazing starwards at the firework displays.

As the oracle on the best places to go dating in London we asked them to offer their cupids view on London Bonfire nights and the best ones to visit for a romantic evening for two.

The Great Date Guide’s top picks:

on Friday 5th Nov:

Bishops Park, Fulham (display 8pm: food, funfair, admission £6, £4 in advance)

A lovely little west London park on the banks of the Thames, this display is a family event, but if the kids get too much you can always escape to one of the river front benches for a clandestine cuddle.

Book a corner banquette at Manson, the new, and surprisingly good, place to eat only a short walk away on the Fulham Road for a romantic post fireworks dinner a deux.

on Saturday 6th Nov:

Battersea Park (display 8pm: bonfire, food, bar, admission £6)

One of London’s best parks – there’ll be the essential roasted chestnuts and toffee apples, food stalls and mulled wine a plenty (clearly essential). The bonfire is always impressive, as are the fireworks and there’s no kids funfair – so you can expect a slightly more adult crowd.

When the fireworks are over stroll over the Albert Bridge to the The Phene, a beautiful little pub hidden away in Chelsea’s back streets, for drinks by the fire.

on Sunday 7th Nov:

Victoria Park (display 7.30pm, admission free)

The bonfire night for all the Hackney hipsters but don’t worry as it’ll be all dark and you can distract yourself with one of the London’s most impressive displays. There will of course be food and mulled wine but don’t fill up too much.

Make the most of the East End’s finest hospitality with drinks in the Napolean Bar at Bistrotheque or if you’re out to really impress, a table at the outstanding Viajante for food from the pioneering chef Nuno Mendes.

For further inspiration for things to do over the weekend go to Ooh.com

The Electric Cinema’s Horror Night is the perfect Saturday choice if you’re not up for a full-blown Halloween fancy dress party. Bloody Marys will be available from the bar.

London men gather around, Soho Sanctum offers a new spin on Afternoon Tea called ‘Tea for Gentlemen’. Savour butch treats such as mini burgers or rabbit and pancetta pies, and wash it down with some Jack Daniels. Nurse your “bromance” now.

The event is free to attend and colourful stage shows and performances will sure to spark up Nelson’s grey hat.

We’re a bunch of film buffs at Ooh, and we also enjoy a wee bit of Johnny Depp (or that might just be me). So naturally, we needed to recommend the Flicker Club’s screening of Edward Scissorhands, this Sunday. Taking place in Richmond, the cinema pop up will have tricks and treats lined up for you, so come dressed up as an Avon representative and enjoy.

Ski and snowboard devotees should pop over to the Freeze Festival at Battersea Power Station this weekend. With top bands playing, après ski events and fantastic stunts from top performers in the sport, you don’t have to be a Chamonix convert to appreciate it. Top tip: get the Friday after work ticket for £20.

Another Saturday, another X Factor show. Yawn. Sign up to a singing taster session with The Courage to Sing this Saturday, and prove to Simon Cowell that all musical stars don’t have to be manufactured from talent shows. Or just learn how to sing in tune. That can come in handy too.

Our restaurant choice of the week is Tiny Robot; a cool, shabby-chic diner in W2 serving American-Italian sharing dishes, with meatballs being a real treat. The cocktails are killer too.

Winter arrives in London this weekend with the Freeze Festival, 29th – 31st October, at Battersea Power Station, signalling the kick off of the UK winter ski season.

Our beloved derelict power station is transformed once again into a winter festival land for the Freeze Festival 2010 where you won’t be able to see the woods from the skis, what with all those beanies and jaegerbums descending on the site.

There will of course be snow, shopping and après ski – but what sets this event apart from any other winter festival, or ski show is the chance to watch the big names of freestyle snowboarding and skiing, competing in the LG Big Air World Cup on the 32m high 100m long real snow jump on the banks of the Thames.

As well as the freestyle competition which continues throughout the weekend, the festival boasts an impressive music line up, with live music performances in the main tent from Mark Ronson, Roni Size, New Young Pony Club, I Blame Coco, and Pendulum playing a DJ set to close the festival on Sunday night.

The festival seems to have come a long way from its rather underwhelming premiere in 2008. This year there is a much more impressive spread of après ski activites on hand between the big air and the music to knock yourself out on – with special discounts in the ‘trade village‘, the UK premiere of freeride flick ‘Deeper’ at the O’Neil cinema tent, a bit of extreme mountain biking, or, most obviously, the many sponsored Après ski bars. (Sponsors include your fifteen year old brother’s favourite Relentless energy drinks, Deperados, Ch4, LG and O’Neil.)

For ticket prices and opening times click here.

For those of us who might like to catch a bit of the show on Friday after work, they sell a rather clever ‘after work’ ticket on Friday for £20 (+booking fee £2.50)
